The Power of Faith: Overcoming Personal Struggles and Addiction

In the New Testament, Matthew 21:18-22 recounts a fascinating story about Jesus commanding a barren fig tree to wither away, and it instantly obeys.

This drastic transformation might seem far removed from our daily lives, but upon deeper reflection, it reveals insights into overcoming personal struggles such as addiction.

Consider this real-life scenario – I’m helping a man in his mid-fifties who has fallen prey to the addictive lure of social media and pornography.

While his wife works tirelessly all day, he consumes his night by endless scrolling.

He knows he needs to change but feels trapped in an unending cycle of addiction.

Faith's Transformative Power

Just like how Jesus’ disciples marveled at how quickly the fig tree withered away at His command, we, too, can be amazed by faith’s transformative power.

In response to their amazement, Jesus emphasized that even ‘mountains’ could be moved if one believes.

Could this ‘mountain’ metaphor apply to seemingly insurmountable challenges like addiction?

Perhaps we’ve been conditioned to think that overcoming addiction must be a grueling lifelong process when instant transformation could be possible through unwavering faith.

Addiction Lies Deep

Our struggle against addiction often lies deep within our subconscious mind in our limbic system, the part responsible for survival instincts and pleasure-seeking behavior.

Past traumatic experiences can lock us into harmful patterns, but understanding the psychological roots of these behaviors can help us break free and move toward healing.

So, where do we start?

Here are some strategies worth considering:

  1. Reframe your questions: Instead of asking yourself why you’re depressed or struggling with addictions, reword these questions from a positive perspective. For example, ask yourself how you can attract uplifting people or spend time on quality activities.
  2. Swiftly eliminate negative influences: Focus on immediately removing any harmful elements from your life. Just as Jesus commanded the barren fig tree to wither away, you can remove negative influences in your life.
  3. Redirect your energy: Real transformation becomes achievable when we channel our energy towards positive questions instead of dwelling on negatives.

Remember, the key to overcoming personal struggles and addiction lies in faith – the belief that you can transform instantaneously, just like the barren fig tree.

With a shift in perspective and implementation of strategies, you might move mountains sooner than you think!

Action Steps

1. Identify Your Addiction: Acknowledge there’s a problem and identify what it is. This could be anything from social media addiction, pornography, gambling, or substance abuse.

2. Understand the Root Cause: Analyze your past experiences to understand why you are stuck in these destructive patterns. Understanding the root cause will help start the healing process.

3. Reframe Your Thoughts Positively: Instead of focusing on negative aspects like “why am I addicted?”, shift your focus towards positive inquiries such as “how can I attract uplifting people?” or “what activities bring me joy?”

4. Eliminate Negative Influences: Make a conscious effort to eliminate negative influences from your life.

5. Practice Faith & Belief: Have faith in yourself and your ability to overcome addiction instantly, just like Jesus made the fig tree wither away immediately, so can you make your addiction wither away.

6. Seek Professional Help: If self-help strategies aren’t working, don’t hesitate to seek professional help – therapists, counselors, or support groups can provide valuable guidance and resources.

7. Prioritize Self-care: Ensure you’re taking care of your physical health through regular exercise and a balanced diet; mental health by engaging in stress-relieving activities; spiritual health through meditation or prayer – whatever works best for you to implement the power of faith in your life.

8. Focus on personal growth: Invest time in personal growth by learning new skills, pursuing hobbies, etc., which will keep you engaged and also boost self-esteem, making it easier to resist the temptations of addiction.

9. Set Clear Goals: Set clear goals about being free from addiction and what kind of person you want to become; this provides motivation during tough times when temptation strikes again.

10. Be Patient With Yourself: Overcoming an addiction isn’t easy, so be patient with yourself throughout this journey – remember, every step forward counts no matter how small it seems!
